Grilled Sardines 1
Grilled sardines are one of the most emblematic dishes of the summer in Lisbon. Eaten on a slice of bread, or with grilled bell pepper and boiled potatoes as a side dish, their delicious aroma fills the streets of the city and is an indispensable part of summer. The most famous sardines are from Setúbal, but it is in the streets of the capital that they are eaten at any time, mainly during the Festas dos Santos Populares (Popular Saints’ Day Feasts). The various traditional neighbourhoods set up large BBQs in the streets and when people pass by they listen to the music, drink a glass of something, sing a song and eat another sardine to get in the spirit. Served on a plate or on bread, it’s worth trying this unique speciality, which for many represents the wonderful days of summer.
